Goodbye Summer

Well, it's been official for awhile now. Summer is so, so, over. It's time for new things - new classes, new friends, new homes. A new environment, a new year. Hopefully, we'll be able to make this season as life-altering as the last.

"I'm amazed at all who'll be"

Meet Sonya.

Meet Mashavu, a 2-year-old lioness being trained by Sonya as part of her internship at Potter Park Zoo.

Meet Sonya's Fosters here

“Literally, every single foster cat I have in my house would be dead. Like, absolutely one hundred percent they were going to euthanize all of them if I hadn’t gotten them. So it’s like, I don’t mind not having some other things so that I can have the cages and try to help them.”

Blake

This summer I was honored to meet the Stauffer family. I met Blake while on assignment for the Eric "Ricstar" Music Therapy Camp. I walked in - very sleepy - and sat in the corner of a room to observe for awhile. I was looking down, getting my camera out in preparation, when I see two skinny legs standing in front of me. I looked up, set my camera down, and met the eyes of a seven-year-old camp participant named Blake. He looked me dead in the eye for one moment, then flung his arms around my neck and collapsed into my lap. By and far, this was one of the most life-altering hugs I have ever recieved. And I love hugging. After embracing, he simply turned around, sitting crossed-legged on top of my crossed legs and seemed just content to sit in my lap and continue on with camp activities. Of course, counselors had to drag him off but that doesn't mean I didn't get to spend some quality time with him later on.

Basically, this family is amazing. Jennifer, Blake's mother, is a phenomenal, busy, beautiful lady. She and her husband home-school Blake themselves and are extremely active in the community, not to mention are also busy raising Sam, their foster (soon to be adopted) son who was born in November.

I did a audio slideshow story on the family which unfortunately due to time crunches and miscommunications didn't turn out as good as I would have liked, but I really liked the pictures themselves. Check it out at http://www.statenews.com/index.php

I think this post has more words in it than the rest of my entire blog combined, so here's some pictures.

Through the roof! And underground!

Last week I published the first part to my College Assistant Migrant Program (CAMP) project. It was probably the most work I've put into...anything...ever. Also probably the most difficult feat of photojournalism I've tried to tackle. And it's not very good, but that's okay. I'm going to continue working with it and publishing more.

Anyways, enough ranting. Here's the people you'll meet along the way of it (http://www.statenews.com/index.php/multimedia/28961/5) with pictures you couldn't see.

And when their own walls they will a-crumble,
And all the systems will be discumbumbled,
Around the stump of bigotry, our own

Through the roof! And underground!
Through the roof! Underground!

I had forgotten...

...what it felt like to be exhausted. Then I woke up yesterday morning and remembered.

Is it possible to live an eternal summer? If not, then I've only got one month before I wake up remembering every morning. It's time to play.

fancy pant's birthday. yeah, i know hannah blogged about it already.

super big moth/butterfly/unknown winged creature. for realz, yo.

Soldering

Yesterday, I learned how to spell solder. Today, I took pictures of it. Weird, huh?

Too tilted to publish, but I like it. Funky business.

Awesome to watch the melting. So pretty.

Completion

If someone held a gun to my head and told me to define myself, I'd pull out this picture.

Seriously? Sneaks AND maps? WITH MY NAME?!

On a side note, if I had $89, I would simply stick my foot out to said gunman since I would obviously be sporting my kicks. But I don't have $89. Rats.

because Lil' Jon ALWAYS tells the truth.

well, i got about 234,524,234 things to do now that i've got class again - so i'm blogging to avoid it, among other procrastination activities.

and because Nichole's so damn cute.

so here's Pride Fest. It was fun, despite the fact my story didn't work out yet for the Michigan Peace Team since no one protested. But I guess it was nice that no one showed up to be fuckin' idiots.

i'll caption later. after all, i do have an entire book to read by 9 a.m. tomorrow.

and i can't find my notebook...

Tittabawassee River Project

Monday was spent in Midland, photographing birds and such. It was a nice surprise to see 'Uncle' Tim, who I lived with for five days when me & Sam traveled to 'Bama with the triathlon team, and spend time with him learning about the work being done by MSU to find out the extent of damage done, or not done, to wildlife living by the river after H.H. Dow dumped a bunch of chemicals around the joint years and years ago.

Next up will be Bike Hospital, aka my backyard, just to document my extreme return to the biking realm. I'll never leave it again. Whitney already did a pretty good job of documenting life at 586 Gunson though, so check out her blog if you want the in-depth lifeview.

me and my friend made a comic book

...and guess how long it took

For some reason, yesterday feels like an eternity ago. However, I do remember riding my bike with no handlebars. And almost breaking my leg hopping back over a fence that surrounded the pool we swam in. Obviously, I keep Robert in mind while making life decisions.

Whoa I spend a lot of time at Bower.

Society for Creative Anachronism. Not Anarchism.

I found these guys on a feature hunt/bike ride Wednesday evening. They were fun and I wish I had been able to spend more time hanging. They spent $500 dollars on cloth for their costumes beforehand.

Mason

I can't wait to bike back to Mason. What kinda town gives a girl 10% off her ice cream cone just for wearing Converse and being too poor to afford real shorts? THIS ONE!

SRSLY?

how have i not seen this already? dude - this is damn righteous despite taking homeboy almost a thousand polaroids to create. it's a creation of stop-motion polaroids and video, and it's sweet. by Jordan C. Greenhalgh/The Chase Factory.

this isn't as cool. but it's got pretty colors, and it's mine. gotta balance, 'nah mean?

Looks like lonely is all that I got

I guess I'll never know what could have been

-it sure ain't helpin' this mood that I'm in-

It DOWNPOURED last night right before the race. Attn: converse shoes are NOT waterproof.
It was wonderful though. Everyone was running around crazy busy with last minute things to take care of - broken bikes, injuries and wracked nerves.

I shot this two ways - one at 1/30 shutter speed steading the camera against a rail, and then again with a flash. But I definitely liked the first better, even if the rain was streaks rather than drops.

It's beautiful here. Someone please remind me why I'm still in college, because I'm really itching to run away. Far away.
I apologize if one day I disappear. But I think those of you who I care about will understand, and I'll call you from a payphone eventually. Or just come find me and join me.

"I see a lone rider"

crossing the plain

HEYYYYY ROBERT?

ATTN: nick and jason...you have been replaced.

"...before that sun goes down"

Gone find my baby

Whouh.

By plane, train or automobile - I'm outta here. Gonna start life over at a latitude of 39.43115 N and a longitude of 123.43162 W.

I will attempt to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a computer hacker.

Good thing I have a compass to get where I'm going...I don't wanna be lost anymore.

Why does my heart, feel so bad?
